Perfect Vents: A Family-Owned Solution Built From the Flooring Store Up

Some products begin with a plan to enter a market. Perfect Vents began with a customer who had a problem.

The customer had selected beautiful new flooring but did not understand why matching floor vents were not part of the project. Like many homeowners, she was left choosing between her new floor and the same bulky metal registers that interrupted its finished look.

Joe Kennedy’s brother was the person speaking with her that day. Because the Kennedy family had spent years working directly with flooring customers, he understood her frustration. The conversation exposed a gap in the industry: homeowners were investing in floors they loved, but one of the most visible finishing details was being overlooked.

That moment helped inspire Perfect Vents: a solution created by a flooring family for the customers they already understood.

McCullough’s Flooring recently spoke with Joe Kennedy, owner of Perfect Vents, about the company’s beginnings, the care behind its patented system, and the customer service that continues to distinguish the family-owned business today.

A Family Grounded in Flooring

Flooring knowledge in the Kennedy family reaches back generations. Joe’s father began working at his future father-in-law's flooring store when he was only 16. After gaining experience in the industry, including time as a representative for a large carpet company, he opened his own flooring store in 1987.

That history matters because the Kennedy family understood how homeowners shop for flooring, the questions they ask, the challenges installers encounter, and the details that can either complete a project or distract from it.

They also understood something every good flooring professional learns: customers do not always know which questions to ask. Most people would not walk into a showroom requesting a vent made from their flooring because they may not know such a product exists. But once they see the difference, they immediately understand its value.

Perfect Vents entered the flooring market in 2018, but the solution required years of careful development. Joe filed the first patent application in December 2017, and it was granted in May 2020. A second patent followed in July 2022. The magnetic system took an additional six to nine months to develop, and the installer template came later.

That progression reflects the way the company began: identify a real problem, study it from the perspectives of the homeowner and installer, and keep refining the answer until it works.

A Vent Designed to Belong With the Floor

Traditional floor registers often sit above the floor and visually interrupt it. Some coordinating accessories are made from a separate wood-composite material and stained in an attempt to approximate the flooring.

Perfect Vents takes a different approach. Each vent is made from the actual flooring selected for the room. That provides an exact match in color, thickness, and texture, while allowing the pattern and sheen to coordinate naturally with the surrounding planks. Rather than competing with the design, the vent becomes part of it.

The company’s patented system uses embedded magnets to connect the vent cover to a specialized metal support plate beneath the flooring. This creates a secure, flush fit without nails, screws, or adhesives. The homeowner can lift and rotate the cover 180 degrees to turn the airflow completely on or off. The cover also remains removable for duct cleaning and future access.

The flush profile provides practical benefits as well as a more finished appearance. It eliminates the raised edge of a traditional register, allows vacuums and robotic cleaners to travel across the area more easily, and is specifically engineered to work with the movement requirements of floating floors.

Perfect Vents can be made for luxury vinyl plank and laminate flooring. Joe also discussed options for solid hardwood and engineered wood, although their construction and operation differ because natural wood responds to temperature and humidity. A McCullough’s Flooring design consultant can help determine whether a particular product is compatible.

Creating Options for Real Homes

Because the idea grew from real customer needs, Perfect Vents was designed to accommodate the realities of flooring projects.

The vents can be installed during the original flooring installation or added afterward. If an existing opening was cut larger than the company’s standard profile, Perfect Vents offers a retrofit option. Careful measurements of both the duct opening and the opening in the finished floor help ensure the correct fit.

The company can also work with flooring brands it does not already stock. Perfect Vents provides a prepaid shipping label so material can be sent to its Michigan facility. Approximately 16 inches of flooring is required for each vent, along with one or two extra pieces as a precaution.

Custom sizes are available. The current support system can span an opening up to 7½ inches wide, while expandable support plates allow the vent to be made as long as the project requires.

Once the company receives the order and flooring material, its standard turnaround time for a custom vent is approximately three to five business days.

The company’s offerings extend beyond its familiar matching floor vents. Perfect Vents also has drain covers and installation templates. The templates are part of the care Joe’s team has put into helping installers make precise cuts and achieve a clean finished result.

Helping Customers See What Is Possible

Joe and I also discussed the role flooring retailers play in helping customers discover this option. A homeowner cannot request a product they do not know exists, which makes education and presentation important.

Working sample boards allow customers to see the vent made from the flooring, lift the cover, and understand how the airflow system works. Tags placed with compatible flooring displays can let clients know that matching vents are available for the products they are considering.

Installation videos are another valuable part of that conversation. Customers often feel more comfortable after watching an installer place a Perfect Vent into the floor and seeing how the magnetic cover fits, opens, closes, and can be removed. What initially sounds unfamiliar becomes much easier to understand once they see the system in action.

From my perspective as a flooring consultant, planning for the vents should begin at the same time as planning for the floor. When I measure a customer’s rooms, I explain that I will also count and measure the floor vents. I can identify which vents coordinate with each room and include those options in the proposal. The customer can then decide whether to include every vent or select the places where a matching flush vent will make the greatest visual difference.

Entryways, vents located in the middle of a kitchen, and other highly visible or awkwardly placed registers are often the best places to prioritize. A vent hidden beneath a bed may feel less urgent.

Customers do not have to make the same choice for every room; they simply need the information and measurements necessary to make the right decision for their home.

“A matching flush vent is one of those finishing details you will never regret including.”

The Service Behind the Solution

A well-designed product is only one part of a successful flooring project. Retailers and installers also need timely answers and the confidence that the manufacturer will stand behind its work.

During the early years that McCullough’s Flooring carried Perfect Vents, our installers naturally had questions about working with a new system. On one occasion, Joe personally called one of our installers to discuss the best way to prepare for a laminate vent installation. That willingness to speak directly with the person completing the work helped our team move forward with confidence.

I have also contacted other members of the Perfect Vents team several times with questions. They respond quickly, explain the information thoroughly, and make sure we understand the next step. Abby, in particular, does an exceptional job of breaking down product information. At McCullough’s, she has become our go-to person whenever we have a Perfect Vents question or concern.

Our orders are consistently accurate, and problems are rare. Still, packing mistakes and shipping accidents can happen with any product. On the few occasions when we have caught an issue, the Perfect Vents team has taken responsibility and acted quickly to correct it.

That responsiveness speaks volumes in a busy flooring store. Our customers have schedules, installers have timelines, and we need vendor partners who help us keep projects moving. We know we can count on the Perfect Vents team, and that reliability is one of the most important qualities we look for in the companies we represent.

Growing Without Losing the Foundation

Perfect Vents began in the basement of the Kennedy family’s flooring store, later expanding into a barn and then the store’s loft. The company received a strong response at The International Surface Event in 2019 and 2020. After the pandemic temporarily slowed its momentum, growth began building again around the middle of 2021.

The business eventually outgrew those early spaces and moved into a warehouse in Holly, Michigan. Perfect Vents manufactures its products in Michigan and sources its support metal, templates, and coatings from other Michigan businesses.

Yet the most meaningful part of the company’s growth may be what has remained unchanged. Perfect Vents is still a family-owned business shaped by firsthand flooring experience. Its team continues to answer questions, support installers, solve problems, and listen to the people using the product.

More Than a Finishing Detail

Anyone can describe the technical features of a floor vent. The more valuable story is why Perfect Vents exists.

The Kennedy family recognized a frustration their customers were experiencing and used their knowledge of flooring to develop a thoughtful solution. Then they built the service around it to help retailers, installers, and homeowners use that solution with confidence.

That is an exceptional foundation for a company because it leaves room to keep listening and evolving. Products may change, sizing may expand, and new flooring materials will continue to enter the market. But a company that begins by understanding its customers is well positioned to keep solving the next problem, too.

When planning your next flooring project, ask your McCullough’s Flooring design consultant about Perfect Vents. We can measure the openings, explain the available options, and help you decide where matching flush vents will make the greatest difference in your home.
