A power stretcher is just what it sounds like: a powered means of stretching carpet. When used properly, it'll drastically reduce wrinkling or waves in your carpet over time. All carpet does stretch a little due to wear and foot traffic. But if it's stretched to its maximum tension when installed, it'll last much longer. And it'll stay more flush with your floor.
The power stretcher has a large lever that the installer pumps. It helps the installer to pull the carpet with greater force and leverage. By using this tool, your installer will be able to stretch the carpet effectively onto the tack strip against the wall.
If your installer uses a knee kicker, this is a red flag. Like the name suggests, a knee kicker is a smaller tool. It requires the installer to get on his hands and knees and kick across the carpet in order to stretch it. In areas where a power stretcher cannot fit, such as a closet, this is understandable.
But a knee kicker should not be used when installing carpet wall-to-wall. It can’t provide the same amount of stretching force. And, while the carpet may look fine on the day of installation, within a few years it'll be wrinkled.
